Abdarahmane (Abda) Wone
Abdarahmane (Abda) Wone is the North American Communications Director for the African Liberation Forces of Mauritania (FLAM) and a speaker for the American Anti-Slavery Group (AASG). In 1989, when Abda was just 16 years old, his family, along with more than 120,000 other black Africans, was deported from Mauritania by the totalitarian regime then in power.
Although more than 80% of Mauritania consists of black Africans, the Arabo-Berber minority controls the government and enforces a centuries-old system of slavery. Today, a large percentage of the Arab Muslim minority holds over 500,000 black African Muslims as slaves, forcing them to work as servants and inheriting and trading them like property.
Mr. Wone, having seen slavery in Mauritania first-hand and experienced the discrimination and racism of the Arab-dominated regime, has dedicated himself to advocating for the rights of Mauritanian slaves and refugees for the past 17 years.
Upon relocating to Senegal, Mr. Wone completed his schooling, received a degree in journalism and worked for Sud Quotidien, a Sengalese daily newspaper as well as Diamono FM, where he worked as an interviewer and commentator. Mr. Wone moved to Buffalo in 2000 and completed a degree in International Affairs at SUNY Buffalo. He is currently pursuing a graduate degree in International Affairs at Columbia University in New York City. Known as an abolitionist, Abda Wone promotes human rights causes in Africa, the United States, and Canada.
