Lesson Seven: TV Addresses Modern-Day Slavery

Overview

Students will request and receive a copy of an October 1999 episode of Touched by An Angel. Students will have a class debate about slave buybacks as presented in Touched by An Angel.

Objective

Students will understand various perspectives in the slave buyback debate.

Time Frame

Letter writing: 30 minutes plus 4-6 weeks waiting time
Video and discussion: 30 minutes

Materials

1. Touched by an Angel video clip

Procedure

1. Students will write a letter to the producers of Touched by an Angel to request a copy of the video clip.

2. After obtaining the video, students will view it.

3. Facilitate large group discussion about the slave buyback debate.

Follow-Up Activities

1. Students will journal about reactions to debate.
2. Students will write an opinion article defending one side of the debate.
3. Students will write letters to producers of Touched By An Angel expressing their reactions to the T.V. show.
