Lesson Five: Newsflash: CBS Evening News

Overview

Using a portion of February 1, 1998 CBS Evening News broadcast about slavery in Sudan that students have requested from CBS, students will determine the four major types of modern-day slavery: forced labor, debt bondage, chattel slavery, and child labor. In addition, students will consider the personal, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual elements of a slave’s life that are expressed through the visual images of the broadcast. Students will work in a large group to explore these issues and to chart the elements of the four major types of modern day slavery.
